A keen gardener and flower arranger Tanya Wolfkamp grows many exotic blooms in her garden on Waiheke Island and has long been an admirer of the highly detailed flower paintings of the Dutch Golden Age. She has a special regard for the work of two women painters who excelled in this field: Maria van Oosterwijck (1630–1693) and Rachel Ruysch (1664–1750). Their compositions were created from individual flower studies and even book illustrations with the same flower appearing in many different paintings. For this latest series in the digital decoupage style Tanya created a decade ago, she rearranges botanical and period details from vintage illustrations on richly textured backgrounds to make harmonious and lyrical compositions, drawing from her Dutch heritage, background in textile design and broad knowledge of the New Zealand habitat.
