The beautiful Fantail necklace by Winter in July is as the name implies. The fantail has a distinctive fanned tail and is the best known native bird in New Zealand.
Maori legend says that a fantail and an owl spotted Kupe, the first Polynesian, who discovered New Zealand. They did a haka for the “birds of the sea” (boats) that Kupe came with. The fluttering movement of the fantail inspired the war dance, the haka.
Each Winter in July piece is designed and handcrafted by MJ Paik in her studio in Auckland, New Zealand.
